The ski season lowdown: Resort recommendations and top tips from champion snowboarder Jenny Jones

E-mail Print PDF

Jenny Jones

he 31-year-old champion may now spend her time tackling rails and halfpipes (more on snowboarding jargon later), but she was once a bright young beginner, looking for a great holiday too.
TravelMail caught up with the Bristolian to hear her top snowboarding tips, resort recommendations and a lesson in how to sound cool on the slopes...
One of my favourite places to snowboard is Jackson Hole in Wyoming, USA.It is beautiful and has a real ranch-like feel to it, there's a great atmosphere. The terrain is amazing and there is plenty of powder for off-piste skiing.
Colorado, also in the US, has great freestyle terrain parks too, particularly near the resort of Breckenridge. But, for more sedate skiers, Aspen is a great choice. My parents, who I would class as beginner-to-intermediate skiers, really enjoyed their recent trip there. It's quite popular with the stars and very plush, but has lovely wide, open pistes for novices.

We sometimes like to use a bit of jargon. 'Freestyle' means doing jumps, and using things like halfpipes (they, unsurprisingly, look like a pipe cut in half and are used as a ramp for jumps) and rails (used to grind a snowboard along for jumps and tricks). 'Freeriding' can mean anything from leisurely skiing on the slopes or going off-piste to be more adventurous.

It's not all about America and Canada. There are plenty of great European resorts too. I am particularly fond of Tignes in the French Alps, it is really high and is where I did my first season. I really improved my snowboarding out there - I'd only been on a one-week snowboarding holiday before that!

For beginners, I would recommend the town of Morzine, or Avoriaz, the ski village that is slightly higher up the mountain - they both share the same slopes, making a huge piste area.
They are great for families, you just step out of your hotel or chalet and the nursery slopes are right there. I would recommend you head there later in the season though as they are not that high. Going from January onwards should give the best chance of good snow.

Mayrhofen in Austria is another great resort and is nice and high, meaning the snowfall is much more reliable. It has a huge terrain which makes for exciting skiing and it is a really traditional Austrian town with great aprés-ski - meaning nice restaurants and bars for evening activities.

I'm often asked about my top tips for snowboarders. I'd say, if you're learning, invest in some padded shorts. They may not be the most flattering thing in the world - girls don't like them because they say they make their bums look big - but you will be falling over a lot and they certainly cushion the blow.
