Volunteer with Surfers Against Sewage to help keep Britain’s Beaches ‘Barefoot Friendly’

Surfers Against Sewage’s (SAS) beach clean crew is joining forces with Barefoot Wines again this summer for the 3rd instalment of our popular ‘Barefoot Friendly’ beach clean tour. We’ll be visiting 5 beaches across England and Wales between 28th July and 1st August to make sure they are as clean as possible for all to enjoy.

We are calling for volunteers to help us clean beaches at 5 locations around the UK, so if you value your beach as much as we do, please come along and join in. In 2009 we welcomed over 600 volunteers who helped us remove over 2 tonnes of litter from the 6 beaches. With your support we are aiming to make this year‘s tour more successful than ever, attracting even more supporters and removing even more unwanted litter from our nation’s beautiful beaches.

· 28th July, Cromer (By the pier), 3pm – 7pm

· 29th July, East Witterings (in front of the Surf Café), 3pm – 7pm

· 30th July, Isle of Wight, Compton Beach (Hanover Point car park), 3pm – 7pm

· 31st July, Pembrokeshire, Newgale Beach (Newgale House Car Park) 3pm- 7pm

· 1st August, Widemouth (Beach Car Park), 3pm – 7pm

Studies show that each year our tide lines are flooded with ever-increasing amounts of marine litter. Over 70% of this litter is plastic, which sadly causes the deaths of over a million marine mammals and seabirds each year.

So, join us at one of the destinations where you will be welcomed to the team for a fulfilling, fun and educational event.

The beach cleans will take two hours from 3pm – 5pm at each location. All beach cleaners will get a free Barefoot/SAS Volunteers t-shirt and, as a thank you for their time, there will be a free BBQ on the beach, washed down with samples of the Barefoot Wines, giving us all the chance to reflect on a job well done.

This is the third year that Barefoot has partnered with the SAS team and the beach cleaning campaign. Barefoot supports hundreds local and community events, charity fundraisers, music festivals and sporting events throughout the year and the SAS partnership is an integral part of the community project work.

We ask all volunteers to come dressed in appropriate clothing, including footwear, for the weather on the day of their beach clean. Make sure you protect yourself from the sun, rain or wind!

SAS Campaign Officer, Dom Ferris, says: ‘Every time we do a beach clean, wherever it is in the country, we are blown away by the support we receive from the general public. People really value their beaches and want to do their part to protect them, just like the whole team at SAS. We are delighted to have the continued support of Barefoot Wines to help us clean up even more beaches. Please join us to make more beaches ‘Barefoot Friendly’ this summer.’

Chief Barefooter, Ali Feest, says: “It’s great to be able to support such a worthwhile campaign and we are honoured to be working with the SAS again for the third year in a row. The tour is a fantastic opportunity for people of all ages to get together and show their support for British beaches. We are looking forward to rolling up our sleeves and getting stuck into the 2010 tour and of course, to raise a glass of delicious Barefoot wine at the end of each day.”

Please confirm that you are attending the beach clean by emailing Dom on dom@sas.org.uk with the date & location that you’d like to attend or by calling 01872 555 953 (We need to make sure we have enough t-shirts, food and drink!)

Downhill Longboarding Tips

July 16th, 2010
Photobucket
Skating those big gnarly hills can really put your skills to the test and being properly prepared is vital to being safe and having fun. You need to be comfortable on your board and know how to do the basics such as carving and footbreaking (sliding certainly helps too). Once you start feeling confident about bombing hills, follow these short guidelines to help defeat that big hill you’ve had your eye on.

1. Proper Safety Gear – Having adequate safety gear such as a helmet, gloves, knee/elbow pads is crucial to being confident on hills and can really help prevent injury. At the very least you should be wearing a helmet (full face for high speeds) and slide gloves as these areas are the most prone to injury. Slide gloves also help with cornering and sliding to help kill speed, so it really is a no brainer to have a pair.

2. Scout the Road – Make sure to walk the whole downhill run to look for areas of loose gravel and big potholes that may send you flying off your board. It’s important to make sure you have enough space to ride out your speed at the end (especially if you are unable to slide or footbreak at high speed).

3. Proper Downhill Gear – Not all skateboards are made the same and some are just not adequate for doing downhill skateboarding safely. Generally downhill boards are much stiffer as having flex in the board makes it really squirrely at higher speeds. Longboards such as the Loaded Dervish are notoriously flexy and should be avoided at all costs for downhill skateboarding.  Shorter wheelbases will also make the ride more unstable and generally the lower the board the more stable it is at higher speeds.

4. Inspect Your Gear – You must inspect all your gear before bombing that big hill, simple things like a loose axle nut can really ruin your day believe me. I’ve had two separate instances of finishing a downhill run picking up my board and having the truck hanger just drop off my board, pretty scary to think if that happened at high speed. Also make sure your trucks are tightened/loose enough for what your doing. Too lose and you may get speed wobbles, too tight and you may not be able to carve enough which again can cause speed wobbles.  Also make sure your bearings are clean and lubed, the last thing you want is a bearing to sieze up while at 40 mph (yes it can happen).

5. Avoid Traffic – If the downhill run your thinking about doing has a lot of car traffic on it, then think about finding a different hill. Cars are your number one enemy and obstacle and people in cars really don’t understand longboarders so try and avoid them at all costs. If you do decide to skate a high traffic road, make sure you know how to shutdown slide and footbreak effectively.

6. Play it Safe – On your first run make sure to try and play it safe, try taking the hill from halfway up instead of the full thing to see how you handle the corners and turns. Many times I’ve went to bomb a hill only to end up going way faster than expected. Make sure to just take it easy and airbrake and footbreak before corners to shave speed off so you can make the turn safely.

7. Follow Car – Having a follow car is certainly a nice thing to have but isn’t as necessary as the other steps. A follow car can stay behind the skater blocking any traffic from riding up behind the skaters dangerously as cars often love to do.  I definitely recommend having one if the option is there (its nice to have a lift back up the hill too!)

8. Blind Corners – Always make sure to STAY in your lane when taking a blind corner and make sure your at a safe speed. Always try to be conservative when it comes to cornering as it’s very easy to get runover if your not paying attention completely.

9. Have fun – Downhill skateboarding is all about having fun so get out there and bomb those gnarly hills. Just make sure to do it right and safely and you will become much more comfortable on your board at those high speeds. Remember having the right gear is vital to being a successful downhill rider.

Surfboards, Sailing, SUPs, Canoes, Ocean Skis and Wakeboards add to the fun at Paddle Round The Pier

Paddle around the Pier Brighton 2010

Paddle around the Pier Brighton 2010

This year’s Paddle Round The Pier Beach Festival plays host to some fantastic water-based events, all helping to raise thousands of pounds for three deserving charities.
The action kicks of for professional paddleboarders early on the Saturday morning with the Funky Puffin Euro Enduro SUP race. A gruelling 20 mile stand-up paddle to Worthing Pier and back – seeing competitors from across Europe and beyond.
Another race for watermen (and girls) is the Errant Surf Holidays Pier2Pier challenge. This sees both ‘amateurs’ and ‘pros’ paddle from the eastern side of the Brighton Pier across to the west side of the West Pier – a tough paddle of over 2 miles against the current.
Also a favourite with the crowds is the ‘Paddle Something Unusual’, where teams paddle ‘unusual’ rafts they have built around the West Pier and back. The past few years has seen a floating island, pirate ship, Dodgeball court and even Thunderbird 2!
And of course at 2pm on the Sunday it’s the event that started this all back in 1996 – the ‘Paddle Round The Pier’. Hundreds of people will take to the water on surfboards, bodyboards, paddle boards, canoes etc and paddle around the West Pier. Having collected sponsorship money each will make a massive difference to the amount raised for the charities.
Other water based events include: the Neilson Sailing Regatta, Inshore Rescue Boats, Outrigger Canoes, The British Ocean Ski Series, Wakeboarding displays and a Fishing Contest (held at Brighton Marina).
If you want to have a go at some sports yourself then you can head to the beach and try out the likes of wakeboarding, kayaking and Stand Up Paddleboarding.
Over 40,000 people are expected to attend this year’s event, which takes place on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 July at Hove Lawns in Brighton and is completely free of charge to visit.
And organisers are hoping to raise over £30,000 for this year’s chosen charities from donations made by visitors. The charities are the Royal National Lifeboat Institute, SurfAid International and Whoopsadaisy.
As well as all of the water activities, there is a lot going on in the ‘Paddle Village’ on Hove Lawns and the promenade next to the beach. Hundreds of stalls, children’s entertainment area, main arena and big top with live bands, plus tons more fun.

Alberta Tar sands the true story coming to a cinema near you.

June 6th, 2010

H2oil a  new film looking at the impact oil being extracted from Alberta tar sands, is set for release in the UK on June 11.

The film shows the devastating consequences that this industry is having on the both local population’s health and water supply.

The method of extracting the crude oil from the tar sands is massively water intensive with it taking four barrels of water to produce just one barrel of oil. This is resulting in mass water shortages in the area as well as leaving giant lakes of toxic, contaminated water.

H2Oil forms part of the toxic fuels trilogy along with dirty oil and petropolis that explore the devastating impact of the Alberta oil industry.

The film will be shown at 20 vue cinema across the UK on June 15. Check out the website to find a cinema near you.

Ancient Style Surfing in Peru

June 4th, 2010

Red Bull team riders learning how to use traditional surfboards used by fishermen in Peru.

Sally Fitzgibbons along with Sofia Molanovich and  Nadja De Col learn how to ride the caballitos de totoras that have been used by the Moche people for over 3,000 years.

As you can see from the video, the ancient sea sticks are far heavier and more difficult to control that the ladies’ modern day equivalents.

Looks like a lot of fun though!
